Do you find yourself anxiously checking your guidebook every ten paces? Sticking only to walks on well-marked paths, and never venturing out alone? Gazing longingly up at seemingly untrodden summits, or rushing down at the end of an autumn day to avoid the darkness?
Navigation is a vital skill for hillwalkers, and crucial to your safety – as Mountain Rescue teams can attest, even in this day and age there really is no substitute for a good old map and compass. I can help you build on your existing skills and learn new ones, increasing your confidence and the walks that are open to you.
Courses run on three levels:
Introduction to navigation
Starting from scratch, we’ll gain familiarity with a map and compass, working through a series of fun exercises. We’ll also have a look at planning your own routes, and by the end of the day you should be able to navigate straightforward hill days.
Improve your navigation
Moving on from the basics, we’ll cover techniques such as bearings and pacing, and have a look at navigational strategies and relocation. The day allows lots of time for practise, and by the end you should feel comfortable on trackless terrain.
We’ll start with a refresher of pacing and bearings, refining our techniques and developing confidence. Depending on weather and time of year, we’ll aim to either find some thick cloud (not normally a problem in Scotland!) or carry on into darkness in order to work on poor visibility and night navigation. By the end of the day you should be comfortable on both featureless and complex terrain, even if you can’t see it.
All these courses run over a full day, so you’ll need to bring your normal walking gear and lunch. Maps, map cases and compasses can be provided, though if you have your own please bring them along. Cost is £30 per person, and the maximum number of students is 6 – though this can be increased to 8 if you would like a bespoke course for your club, school or group.
We do not currently have any navigation dates in the calendar. However we can run bespoke courses or single training days local to our base in Edinburgh. Prices start at £70 for a half day and £120 for a full day. Please contact us for more information or to book.
